BANGKOK (AP) - A double-decker tour bus carrying students on a school
trip to the beach crashed Friday into a truck in eastern Thailand,
killing 15 people and injuring more than 30 others, police said.

The fatalities included 13 children, between the ages of 10 and 15, and two teachers, said police Lt. Col. Anukarn Thammavijarn.

The bus was carrying about 60 girls from a school
in northeastern Nakhon Ratchasima city for a daytrip in the seaside town
of Pattaya. As it drove along a downhill road in the early morning
darkness, it lost control and slammed into an 18-wheeler truck that was
in front of it, Anukarn said.

After making impact, the bus spun around and
slipped off the shoulder of the road. Pictures from the crash site in
Prachinburi province, near their departure site, showed the windows had
shattered on both levels of the bus.

Police were searching for the driver, who fled the
scene, and were investigating whether the brakes had failed or if the
driver had dozed off at the wheel.

"We suspect there might have been a problem with
the brakes, because the bus looked old," Anukarn said. "But we're not
ruling out the possibility that the driver might have been asleep."

Another double-decker bus carrying male students
from the same school was following the girls' bus but not involved in
the accident.

Road accidents are common in Thailand, where safety
standards are poor and road rules are rarely enforced. Last year, more
than 8,600 people died in accidents on Thai roads.

Trucks collided with bus, three killed

A regularly scheduled bus traveling from Oslo’s main airport
at Gardermoen to mountain communities in Sogn og Fjordane was struck
head-on by a truck during the night, and then from the rear by another
truck west of Hønefoss. Three persons on board the bus were killed,
including its driver.

Two passengers on board the bus were also killed and three others
injured. Norwegian Broadcsting (NRK) reported Tuesday morning that two
of the injured passengers were pinned inside the wreckage, and were
flown to Ullevål University Hospital in Oslo after finally being freed.

The collision occurred on the two-lane State Highway 7 near Veme in
Sokna, Buskerud County just before midnight. NRK reported that a
preliminary investigation into the cause of the crash indicates that the
first truck swerved into the oncoming lane and hit the bus, which then
was also hit by another truck driving behind it.

Both trucks were Norwegian-registered with drivers from Iceland. The
driver of the first truck has been charged in the accident and police
seized his driver’s license as part of their routine. Ole Kristian
Bekkedal, operations leader for the local police, said there were no
indications that any of the drivers were under the influence of drugs or
alcohol and neither of the truck drivers was seriously injured.

“The roads were very slick in the area, but whether that caused the
crash, it’s too early to say,” Bekkedal told NRK. A team from the
national accident investigation board Havarikomisjon arrived on the scene during the night to begin its probe.

The Timeekspressen bus took the brunt of the damage. There
were nine persons on board, with three passengers escaping serious
injury. They were being cared for at a crisis center set up at the
Comfort Hotel Ringerike in nearby Hønefoss.

Mumbai’s Buses on a killing spree, claim 32 lives in 2013 | Latest News & Updates at DNAIndia.com

A big red blot on Mumbai’s big red bus. Over the last couple of
years, the number of fatal accidents involving the city’s public buses
has shot up.

And this came just when the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and
Transport Undertaking’s (BEST) record showed some improvement — two
years ago, it had recorded the third lowest year of fatal accidents in
the undertaking’s history.

In  2013, between January and December, there were 29 fatal accidents
in the city in which 32 people lost their lives. The month of August
saw as many as five ‘deadly accidents’ while October had a clean record
with not a single fatal mishap.

The same period witnessed 123 serious accidents, resulting in 147
Mumbaikars sustaining serious injuries and another 56 who suffered minor
injuries.

In 2012-13, BEST recorded 30 fatal accidents. In 2011-12, it reported
the third-lowest number of fatalities at 26 accidents. A year earlier,
the transport undertaking’s buses saw 49 fatal mishaps.

Taking note of the rising number of accidents, the undertaking has
turned the heat on its drivers. Earlier, those involved in fatal
accidents were suspended from service, now they are dismissed.

Besides, drivers are made to undergo a seven-day refresher’s course to help mitigate the number of mishaps.

Spokesperson of BEST AS Tamboli said that those drivers with zero
accident records are rewarded by BEST. “This is done so that it
motivates driving staff to drive responsibly, carefully and in a safe
manner,” said Tamboli.

A school bus driver in Illinois said she was treated for hypothermia at a hospital emergency room after her employer ignored her repeated pleas that her bus be replaced with one with a working heater during subzero conditions.

Elisha
Jones, a driver for Illinois Central School Bus, said that when she
first got on her bus about 7 a.m. Jan. 23, she complained that it was
cold, but her supervisors insisted the bus would warm up before she
picked up the first children on her route.

A check of the archives on FriendlyForecast.com shows
the temperature in Wheaton, Illinois, from 7 to 8 a.m. that day was -3
degrees, with winds of 19.6 mph and gusts to 27.6 mph. The National Weather Service’s wind chill calculator put the wind chill values for that morning from -26 to as low as -29 degrees.

Much of the country has been grappling with extreme cold temperatures.

Jones
said she was alarmed her employer would show such great disregard for
Monroe Middle School students on her route and for her own safety.

“We
are aware that there was a bus issue last week involving one of the
routes for Monroe,” Wheaton Community Unit School District 200 Public
Relations Director Erica Loiacono wrote in response to an inquiry from
Wheaton Patch. “The Principal was onsite and handled the situation
appropriately. We are following up with Illinois Central accordingly.”

Bus driver, now dead, believed to be killer of Moira Anderson in 1957 - UPI.com

Bus driver, now dead, believed to be killer of Moira Anderson in 1957 - UPI.com

GLASGOW, Scotland, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- A bus
driver who died in 2006 was almost certainly the man who killed a
missing schoolgirl more than half a century ago, a Scottish prosecutor
said Friday.

Moira Anderson, 11, disappeared in 1957 after she took a
bus to buy a card for her mother. Alexander Gartshore admitted she was a
passenger on his bus but said she was alive when he last saw her, the
Scotsman reported.

Lord Advocate Frank Mulholland released
evidence gathered by a police cold case unit that would have been used
if Gartshore was still available for trial.

"This will hopefully
bring closure to the family of Moira Anderson who have had to wait more
than half a century for answers," he said. "I would like to pay tribute
to the campaigners who refused to allow the memory of Moira Anderson to
become forgotten."

Last year, police searched the grave of one of
Gartshore's friends, a man who died in 1957, for Moira's body. They
found nothing, but new witnesses who saw news stories about the
exhumation came forward.

They included a woman, a child herself
in 1957, who said she had seen a man dragging Moira in Coatbridge, about
10 miles east of Glasgow. She picked a photograph of Gartshore out of a
photo array.

Gartshore was convicted in 1957 of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old.

Sandra
Brown, Gartshore's daughter, became convinced her father had killed
Moira. She wrote a book after his death, "Where There Is Evil."

Graeme
Pearson, a former deputy police commissioner in Strathclyde and now a
member of the Scottish Parliament, suggested Gartshore should have been
prosecuted years ago.

"It will remain a mystery why this man was
not a significant suspect at the time of the missing person report and
initial suspicion of a murder," he said.
