Bus driver killed in freak accident, Worcester DA says | Boston Herald

A bus driver lending a helping hand to a passenger trying to
disembark died when the vehicle struck her as it rolled down a street in
North Brookfield, according to Worcester County District Attorney
Joseph D. Early Jr.

The driver, Nancy M. Woods, 46, of Rutland,
was pronounced dead yesterday at Harrington Hospital in Southbridge
following the 3 p.m. accident on Chestnut Street, Early’s office said.

Her
lone passenger, age 45, was still inside the small Worcester Regional
Transit Authority bus when it started moving, Early said. That passenger
suffered minor injuries.

Witnesses told investigators Woods tried
to reach inside the driver’s side door, but she was hit as the bus
continued to roll down Chestnut Street. The vehicle eventually came to a
stop after plowing into a garage on Maple Street.
