CHENNAI: A group of Pachaiyyappa's College
students hijacked an MTC bus on Gandhi Irwin Road and created a ruckus
on Thursday afternoon. They chased away the driver and clicked selfies
on the driver's seat. Traffic was disrupted for more than 30 minutes on
the Gandhi Irwin Road bridge junction close to the city police
commissioner's office in Vepery.
The trouble started at
12.45pm when some 150 students took over a bus on route 12G (between
MMDA Colony and Broadway) as soon as it halted near the College.
Within minutes they got into the bus, some opened the ventilator door
on the roof of the bus and climbed atop, damaging the roof. When the
driver attempted to stop the bus, they banged on the bus, scaring many
passengers. When the driver refused to ply the bus and got down, they
decided to take to the wheel. Several passengers got down and walked.
Unable to put up with the student's mayhem, the conductor alerted a
traffic policeman. Sensing trouble, the students fled. Passengers said
policemen should be posted en route colleges to keep such students under
control.

NEW DELHI — Two crowded
buses went out of control and fell off roads in separate accidents in
the Himalayan foothills in northern India, killing a total of 21 people,
police said Tuesday.
Both accidents happened Monday as the buses were
negotiating winding mountainous roads. India has the world's deadliest
roads, with more than 110,000 people killed annually and most accidents
blamed on reckless driving, poor road maintenance or aging vehicles.
One bus carrying 61 people veered off a road at a turn
and plunged into a deep gorge in Himachal Pradesh state, killing 13
tourists and injuring 43 others, some critically, Nahan town police
officer Sandeep Negi said. The bus had visited the lake resort town of
Renuka Ji.
Rescuers used a crane to lift the vehicle from the gorge. Authorities were investigating the cause of the accident.
About 900 miles (1,400 kilometers) to the east in the
rainy northeastern state of Meghalaya, an overloaded bus went out of
control as it was approaching a bridge and fell into a 10-meter
(35-foot) ravine. Eight people were killed and at least 35 others were
being treated at a hospital for serious injuries, according to South
Garo Hills Deputy Police Commissioner C.P. Cotmare.
Police detained the bus driver for questioning.

driving an SUV slammed into a small passenger bus killing 11 people,
including an infant.
Seme Calixte,

Calixte identified the driver as Jules Lionel Anelus, a member of Haiti's lower house Chamber of Deputies.
The
police commissioner said Sunday that the infant and the child's mother
were among those killed in a colorfully-painted bus known as a "tap

Blind man struck by 'distracted' bus driver
A legally blind man suffered severe injuries and emotional harm
after being struck by a bus driven by a "distracted" driver, a judge
says.
Simon Fogarty suffered four broken ribs, lacerations, a
large cut above his eye, with operations required to remove fluid from
his lungs following the February 8 incident.
He declined to comment following the Dunedin District Court sentencing of Christopher James More, 61, who was driving the bus.
On
the day of the incident, the pedestrian cross signal changed to a green
man coinciding with a rapid beeping sound and a pulse to the pedestrian
crossing plate to indicate Mr Fogarty could cross safely.
The bus driven by More turned right into St Andrews St at the same time as Mr Fogarty, who was knocked to the ground.
"You
were distracted," Judge Kevin Phillips told More, who had apologised to
his victim and undergone a restorative justice meeting.
"Too many drivers don't pay sufficient attention."
More
was disqualified from driving for six months, with reparations of $206
to the Blind Foundation and $556 to his victim, with a further $1000
emotional harm payment for Mr Fogarty.
