23 killed in bus crash in eastern India

At least 23 people were killed when an overcrowded bus hit a truck in India's eastern state of Bihar on Saturday, police said, dpa reported.

The driver of the bus had lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a bend in a village near the state capital Patna.

Senior police official Amit Jain told reporters that 27 people were also hospitalised with injuries.

The bus had a capacity of 50 passengers, but was carrying more than 80 people, with many riding on its roof, police said.

Some 120,000 people are killed in road crashes every year in India, government data shows.

Police blame reckless driving, poorly maintained vehicles and bad road conditions for a majority of the accidents
