At least 3 dead, 42 injured in Shanghai bus crash

SHANGHAI, July 2 (Xinhua) — At least three people were killed and 42 injured after a bus overturned on an expressway in Shanghai’s Pudong New District at around 1:30 p.m. Friday.

The bus with dozens of passengers veered off the road and overturned while en route to Luchao Port on the East China Sea from downtown Shanghai.

A witness said the bus driver was apparently trying to avoid crashing into a car that had suddenly slowed down in front of the bus.

As of 2:30 p.m., three had died and 42 were being treated at two hospitals in Shanghai, a municipal police spokesperson said.

Nanhui Central Hospital in Pudong New District admitted 33 of the accident’s victims, including one who passed away shortly after being hospitalized, said Huang Fengping, head of the hospital.

“Two people are in critical condition, including one with a ruptured spleen,” said Huang.

Eleven others have been hospitalized in Fengcheng Hospital in Fengxian District.

“One died shortly after arriving here. We asked senior doctors from the the Shanghai No.9 People’s Hospital to help us,” said the hospital’s Xie Xingqian.

It is unknown how many people were in the bus when the accident occurred
