Bus driver in crash hooked up to ventilator, fights for his life

The driver of a Chinatown bus - identified as a 57-year-old Brooklyn man - was hooked up to a ventilator in Atlantic City yesterday after surviving a horrific wreck.

Chin Cheung Pang was thrown from the driver's seat through the shattered front window of the crowded Sun Lee Bus as it headed toward the casinos, authorities said. He suffered a broken arm and severe injuries to his face during the wreck on Thursday.

It was unclear if Pang was wearing a seat belt, although New York DMV records indicated he had a prior ticket for driving without one. His record was otherwise clean, officials said.

Pang was driving the bus to Atlantic City when it careened out of control, slamming into a median and bouncing off a car before skidding wildly for 100 feet.

Authorities said 23 passengers were hurt before the bus finally stopped in a shower of sparks and flying glass. Three of the passengers were still hospitalized yesterday.

The cause of the wreck remained under investigation.

Pang's face and arms were bandaged as he lay motionless inside the Alanticare Medical Center, hooked up to the machine that kept him breathing.

The Hong Kong native was in critical condition. He's one of three siblings, according to his sister-in-law. With Shirley Wong
