IRONDEQUOIT — Irondequoit Police today released the name of the woman who was seriously injured when the sport utility vehicle she was driving struck a school bus on Culver Road yesterday afternoon.
Mary Hape, 68, of Rochester suffered internal injuries as well as injuries to her head and face and was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital, said Irondequoit Police Capt. Marty Corbett. She was listed in guarded condition today, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Barbara Anderson, 54, a bus driver for East Irondequoit Central School District, and a 15-year-old female student were taken to Rochester General Hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries and released, said Irondequoit police Lt. Michael DiGiovanni. A 15-year-old male student aboard the bus was not injured.
The students attend Eastridge High School, police said. Police did not release the students’ names.
The crash occurred about 2:30 p.m. on Culver Road, just north of the Route 104 overpass. The half-block stretch of Culver Road between Brookdale Park and Route 104 was closed for hours yesterday.
Corbett said it appeared that Hape was driving east on the Route 104 exit ramp and passed a red light, striking a southbound school bus on Culver.
Police are continuing to investigate. Charges may be pending.
Andrew Wambach was inside his garden center business when he heard a loud sound.
“It sounded like a bomb went off,” he said. “The entire front of the (SUV) was in flames … It was very traumatic.”
