Man, 87, crashes into bus stop

Two adults and a toddler were treated for minor injuries yesterday afternoon after an 87-year-old man hit the accelerator instead of the brakes and crashed his car into a glass-walled bus shelter on Mount Auburn Street in Cambridge, officials said.

The man, whose identity was not released, was not injured, Boston Deputy Fire Chief Francis Murphy said. A Cambridge Police Department spokeswoman said the man was not taken into custody and faces no charges.

The man had been trying to park his Toyota Camry in a handicapped parking space in the parking lot of a Shaw’s grocery store near the intersection of Mount Auburn Street and Homer Avenue, officials said.

He rapidly accelerated, careened over a curb and crashed into the back of the bus shelter, they said. The shelter’s glass wall shattered, cutting three people who’d been standing inside, Murphy said.

A 28-year-old woman and her 4-year-old son were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with minor injuries, officials said. A 29-year-old man also was taken to an area hospital, they said.
