Bus accident closes Georgia NB

UPDATE 5:30: The roads appear clear, with traffic moving freely.

UPDATE 4:30p.m.: Five cars, a pickup truck and a bus were involved in the cascading collision that has turned Georgia Avenue northbound into a bottleneck in Wheaton, police said: A pickup truck driven by an adult male careened over the median, bounced off a Metro bus carrying only a driver, and hit two cars, causing those cars to domino into three more cars.

"The force of the impact caused the truck to go back over the median and hit two cars, and those two cars hit three cars that were next to them," said police spokeswoman Baur, who said that only one person, a driver of one of the cars, was taken to the hospital without serious injuries.

Original post: Northbound Georgia Avenue in downtown Wheaton was closed shortly after 3p.m. after an accident involving a Metro bus required a large tow truck for removal. A caller told police that a truck had collided with a Metro bus that was not carrying any passengers at Reedie Drive.

At about 3:40, one northbound lane opened on the major thoroughfare, said Montgomery County police spokeswoman Lucille Baur.
