MAGNOLIA -- Ridgewood Local School District bus drivers Shelly Ogle, Johanna Mizer, Beverly Scott and Cristy Bower took third-place team honors for their accurate knowledge and skills at the East Region School Bus Safety Road-E-O May 1 at Sandy Valley High School.
The region consists of school districts in Coshocton, Tuscarawas, Wayne, Stark, Muskingum, Holmes, Guernsey, Carroll, Belmont, Columbiana, Jefferson, Monroe, Morgan, Harrison and Noble counties.
The drivers are trained to be alert to what is going on around the school bus at all times. Their skills have to be second nature as the Bus Road-E-O only permits 14 minutes to complete the maneuverability part of the contest which evaluates the driver's everyday duties.
Betty Lewis, another Ridgewood bus driver, served as a judge in one of the maneuverability sections of the course.
Separate from the timed driving course were two timed written tests. The first test was general knowledge of current CDL and Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws and Ohio Pupil Transportation Operation and Safety Rules. Drivers spend a lot of time staying up-to-date with any changes in the current laws. The second written exam dealt with the pre-trip inspection of the bus. By law, a school bus driver is required to make a daily physical inspection of the bus before transporting pupils. The inspection is conducted in a systematic manner to ensure the bus is mechanically safe.
Other top honors at the event went to Shelly Ogle for second-place Overall Top Individual Bus Driver, while Johanna Mizer earned the fourth-place title out of 75 drivers. Ogle earned 708 and Mizer 696 points of the 725 total possible points for the day.
The top six drivers in the region advance to the State School Bus Safety Road-E-O on Saturday at Olentangy Orange Middle School in Lewis Center. Top individuals from the state contest will advance on to the 40th annual School Bus Driver International Safety Road-E-O Competition that will be July 24-25 in St. Louis, Mo.
