The driver's injuries are considered to be life-threatening, but details on his condition aren't being released.
Witnesses say it's fortunate no students were on board when the crash happened.
"It would have been a disaster," said Andy Reiman, who witnessed the crash. "You could see all the benches in the back bunched up on top of each other. It would have been bad."
It's unclear what caused the bus to leave the roadway. The tree blocked the bus from going down an eight-foot ravine.
It happened at the intersection of Kirby Road and Barbee Street in McLean.
